Does Your To-Do List Control You?
If you plan your days from your lists, it does.
Does your to-do list control you?
Confession time – I’m a list maker. I have often joked about how my lists have lists. The problem is, it wasn’t a joke – they really did!
Do you have an ongoing to-do list? You cross one thing off but add 3 more. You’re never making headway and it is beginning to weigh you down.
If you feel like your to-do list is controlling you rather than you controlling your list,
- sit down with your list
- open your calendar and
- brew a good cup of coffee.
A good cup of coffee makes everything better, right?
Review your list assuming you can only accomplish 3 things today. What three things are the highest priority because they are either
- action steps toward your goals or
- are time-sensitive?
Picking up groceries may not move you closer to your goals for the quarter but if you are out of bread and milk it is definitely a priority for the day.
- Identify your three priorities.
- Plan them in your calendar.
- Put your list away.
Focus your attention on those three things and don’t worry about the rest of your list today.
At the end of your day you will feel like you have accomplished something because you achieved your highest priority items.
I know it may seem like an insignificant difference but crossing off all 3 items on your list provides a feeling of accomplishment. Crossing off 3 things with 30 still staring you in the face can leave you burdened and overwhelmed.
Remember, we can’t do it all. So, when you choose your priorities for today make sure you choose wisely.
Y'all have a great week!
