Can you have too many goals?
Creating too many goals sets us up for failure.
You started the year with such excitement - you were ready to put 2020 in the rearview mirror. You created a long list of goals and got busy.
Now you are overwhelmed, confused and not sure what went wrong.
Believe it or not, you can actually set too many goals.
Crazy, right?
Setting goals is awesome – it’s how you make progress and achieve great things.
Yes, you need goals. Y’all know I believe in goals.
Setting goals is the first step to taking action for your future. But when you set too many goals, you can end up confused about where to spend your time.
If you are trying to save money by...
- eating all of your meals at home
- eat healthier by making everything from scratch
- increase your fitness level by exercising for an hour every day
- homeschool your children
- volunteer for your local community organization
- have a spotless home
- spend quality time with your spouse and family and
- meet a friend for coffee once a week
you might have slightly overcommitted yourself. I’m tired just thinking about all of that! 😴
A common goal setting mistake is to plan too many goals.
You are motivated to take positive action and want to get started with everything right now. But when you set too many goals you actually spread your time and resources too thin ultimately leading to overwhelm.
You fracture your focus so that you don’t accomplish anything of consequence.
Rather than accomplishing 10 goals you make limited progress toward a few or even worse give up on all of them.
If you have a long list of goals, pick your top 3 to begin now. Narrow your focus and see what a difference it can make.
Y'all have a great week!
